St. Augustine grass is the backbone of most lawns in The Woodlands and across North Houston. It handles our heat, tolerates shade better than Bermuda, and creates that thick, carpet-like turf homeowners want. But one of the most common mistakes we see is mowing it too short. Getting the height right makes the difference between a lawn that thrives and one that struggles through summer.
Keep Your Blades Between 2.5 and 4 Inches
St. Augustine should be mowed to a height of 2.5 to 4 inches. Most homeowners do best around 3 to 3.5 inches. This range lets the grass develop a deep root system and shade out the soil, which reduces weeds and helps the lawn hold moisture during dry spells. When you scalp St. Augustine down to an inch or two, you expose the stems and soil to direct sun. The grass weakens, weeds move in, and you end up fighting problems that proper mowing would have prevented.
Why Taller Grass Handles Texas Summers Better
Our Gulf Coast climate throws heat, humidity, and sudden dry periods at your lawn. Taller grass blades create more surface area for photosynthesis, which means the plant produces more energy and stays healthier. The extra height also shades the soil, keeping roots cooler and slowing evaporation. During a typical Texas summer, a lawn mowed at 3.5 inches will stay greener and need less water than one cut at 2 inches. The grass can also recover faster from stress like chinch bug damage or a stretch of 95-degree days.
Adjust Height by Season and Shade
You can fine-tune your mowing height based on conditions. In spring and fall, when temperatures are milder, you can mow toward the lower end of the range, around 2.5 to 3 inches. This encourages lateral growth and helps the lawn fill in. When summer heat arrives, raise the deck to 3.5 or 4 inches to protect the grass. If your lawn grows in heavy shade under pines or oaks, keep it on the taller side year-round. Shaded St. Augustine needs every bit of blade surface it can get to capture enough light.
Never Remove More Than One-Third at a Time
This is the one-third rule, and it matters. If your grass is 4 inches tall, don't cut it shorter than 2.7 inches. Removing more than a third of the blade in one mowing shocks the plant and forces it to pull energy from the roots to regrow leaves. That weakens the whole system. If your lawn gets away from you and grows too tall, bring it back down over two or three mowings instead of one severe cut. It takes a little patience, but the grass will stay healthier.
Sharp Blades Make a Real Difference
A dull mower blade tears the grass instead of cutting it cleanly. Those ragged edges turn brown, invite disease, and make the lawn look dull even right after mowing. Sharpen your blades every 20 to 25 hours of mowing, or about once a month during the growing season. Sharp cuts heal faster and keep your St. Augustine looking crisp. This small maintenance step pays off in how your lawn looks and how well it resists problems like brown patch fungus.
